The story and details
Painted in 1873 in the garden of the Monets' rented house at Argenteuil, this is Camille surrounded by mounds of red geraniums, a folded note in her gloved hand and a top-hatted visitor approaching in the background — painted the same year her father died. Monet gives the flowers as much attention as his wife, the whole scene rendered in the same confident, sun-warmed brushwork, so grief and garden sit side by side without either one announcing itself.
