The story and details
The story: Van Gogh painted it at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, from the view out of his east-facing window just before sunrise, adding the village and the cypress from memory and imagination. At the time he thought it a failure. Today it hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is one of the most loved paintings in the world.
