The story and details
The story: Julien Tanguy sold colours to the young painters of Paris and often took their canvases instead of payment; Van Gogh counted him as a friend. He painted him in front of the Japanese woodblock prints he loved and collected — Mount Fuji rising just above Tanguy’s hat, a courtesan, cherry trees in bloom — so that the portrait is also a declaration of everything Van Gogh had learned from Japan. The painting is in the Musée Rodin, Paris. Printed to order on soft cotton.
